For those who have issues with digesting dairy, egg protein or vegan protein powder may be better.
But if you can have dairy, then a natural whey protein powder may be a good option. The problem is that there are many powders on the market today.
And honestly, a lot of them are junk with tons of fillers, chemicals, and other ingredients that may not do your body good.

Whey Protein Powder for Different Goals
In my teens and 20s, I was doing everything in my power to gain as much muscle as possible.
I was able to go from a very thin 125 lbs to 185 lbs in about 8 years. Not all of that was muscle, but I know a good portion of it was because I was getting stronger in the gym.
When I started weight training, I was barely able to squat the bar without any weight (45lbs) for 1 rep and by my late 20s, I could squat my own body weight (185 lbs) for 6-8 reps.
Early on, I found that my body responded to a high-calorie shake 3 times a day in addition to 3 solid real food meals. Remember to not buy the pre-mixed weight/mass gainers because they are junk.
It is much healthier and cheaper to make your own weight gainer smoothie and I will include a recipe below that I used in my 20s.
On the flip side, as I got into my 30s, I didn’t need to gain weight any longer. Whey protein powders are low in calories but high in protein which makes it perfect for fat loss too. When I want to burn fat, I use the fat burning smoothie below.
Muscle Building Smoothie Recipe (Chocolate PB and banana)
- 1 cup of whole milk
- 2 scoops chocolate protein powder
- 4 tablespoons of natural peanut butter
- 1 cup of dry quick oats
- 1 banana (fresh or frozen)
- 3 ice cubes
Blend until smooth and enjoy
Fat Loss Smoothie Recipe (Strawberry Vanilla)
- 2 cups unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- 2 scoops natural vanilla whey protein powder
- 1 cup of frozen strawberries
Blend until Smooth and enjoy

I get two common complaints when I talk about protein powders. First is the taste, and the second is the mixability.
I have been using Optimum Nutrition and Met-RX brands since I began bodybuilding in the early 2000s. They both pass with flying colors regarding excellent taste and mixability.
You can save a little bit of money by getting the non-natural protein powders, but the natural protein has fewer fillers, ingredients, and artificial junk your body doesn’t need. It is worth the extra cost in my opinion.
