So, what’s the difference between amino acids vs protein for muscle growth?
The idea is that amino acids are already broken down, versus protein that must go through the digestive process.
There have been a few studies praising the benefits of amino acids. The first study showed that taking 6 grams of essential amino acids improved protein synthesis and muscle growth. (1)
Protein also does this, but the amino acids do it without extra calories, making it ideal for people who are a restricted caloric regimen.
The second study shows that the body utilizes amino acids more effectively than 40 g of whey protein. More of the amino acids were used to build muscle whereas the whey protein was not efficient in rebuilding muscle tissue. (2)
In conclusion, amino acid supplements seem to have a better effect on muscle growth than protein powder. For this reason, I would recommend amino acids over protein if you’re on a restricted diet.
It is a no-brainer to use amino acids instead of protein if you can receive additional benefits without the caloric load.
However, I think there is a benefit in using both in conjunction with each other as well.
