20 Best Foods to Help With Sugar Cravings While Dieting
Sugar cravings are one of the most challenging things to overcome. However, I have found that sugar cravings and normal cravings are basically the same things.
If you have healthy foods prepared, you will be less likely to go and binge eat. Remember that part of losing weight is being hungry from time to time.
Just don’t let your hunger get so out of control that you do go crazy and ruin your diet.
Here are our favorite foods to help with sugar cravings while dieting
Blueberries
Blueberries are a great choice to help with sugar cravings. They are packed with antioxidants, nutrients, and fiber. Despite them having a sweet taste, they are still fairly low in sugar.
Greek yogurt
I love Greek yogurt! It is one of the best foods to help with sugar cravings. It has double the protein of regular yogurt, is lower in carbs, and tastes amazing.
Just make sure you are getting no flavored low-fat Greek yogurt. Some of the flavored Greek yogurts actually have more sugar than ice cream!
One trick we like to do is put half a scoop of protein powder in a bowl of Greek yogurt, mix it, and put it in the freezer for 30-60 minutes.
It’s basically like ice cream when it is done!
Peanut Butter
Peanut butter is a great food to help with sugar cravings. It is low in sugar, high in polyunsaturated fats.
And tastes amazing. However, make sure there is no added sugar. We like to use Laura Scudder’s brand peanut butter.
Also, watch the portion size because Peanut Butter is very high in calories.
Apples
An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Well, I wouldn’t go that far, but the health benefits of apples are fairly common knowledge.
Apples are also very sweet, so it is one of the better choices to help with sugar cravings.
Protein Powder
Make sure to get protein powder that is minimally processed and not filled with a ton of junk.
We use Optimum Nutrition’s Natural Protein Powder because it has minimal ingredients.
When I am feeling a craving at night, I like to make a chocolate or vanilla milkshake.
- 1 Scoop Chocolate or Vanilla Natural Protein Powder
- 1 half-cup almond or skim milk
- 3 ice cubes
Blend and serve

Sweet Potato
Although sweet potatoes have a sweet flavor, they are actually a lower glycemic index carb than white potatoes.
Just make sure to hold off on the butter and brown sugar. They honestly don’t need it! Just season with a little bit of cinnamon, and they have an amazing taste!
Give it a try!
Dark chocolate
While fruit will definitely satisfy your sweet cravings, there is just something more savory about a chocolate craving.
Dark chocolate has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which make it a great choice as long as in moderation.
Dark chocolate still contains fat and sugar, so keep the snacking to a few squares when you really need it.
Dark chocolate also has been shown to improve your mood by affecting serotonin and dopamine levels. Double benefit!
Fun Fact: While getting ready for his role as Commissioner Gordon in the Justice League Movie, JK Simmons gave himself one square of dark chocolate per day.
Check out the great shape he got into!
Dates
Dates contain a high amount of fiber, potassium, and iron. They are a great option when you are having a sugar craving. Just make sure to limit your portions to 1-3 dates.
They are concentrated and still contain a decent amount of calories.
Avocados
Avocados are technically a fruit, but they are not very sweet. They contain high amounts of essential fatty acids which will keep you fuller and help satisfy cravings.
We love to make guacamole and put it on top of a taco salad. Yum!
Coconut oil
Coconut oils are great to add to low-carb desserts. When I was doing the ketogenic diet, we used to make dark chocolate fat bombs.
It’s never going to be as good as a real dessert, but it certainly was acceptable when dieting.
Here is a great Chocolate fat bomb recipe. Remember to only use this in a pinch as they still contain a lot of calories.

Eggs
Starting the day off with eggs is a great way to keep you full during the day, and eliminate sugar cravings. Make sure to eat the entire eggs as it contains essential fatty acids, protein, and nutrients.
The high cholesterol myth has been debunked. Unless you don’t like the taste of the yolk, eat the whole eggs.
Pistachios
Make sure you get shelled Pistachios. Part of shelling them is part of the fun. Also, you are less likely to binge eat when they are pre-shelled for you.
Pistachios are slightly sweet, but still a great snack in moderation if you are having a sugar craving.
Cinnamon
Using Cinnamon is a great way to sweeten foods without adding sugar.
It also has a thermogenic effect which can help burn more fat. Other benefits include being packed with vitamins, minerals and other nutrients the body thrives on.
It is may also help lower blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of diabetes.
Fruit smoothies
Fruit smoothies are a great option, especially in the morning when you don’t have a lot of time. It will keep you full for several hours and limit the chances of a sugar craving.
And did I mention, it tastes amazing! One of my favorite smoothies is:
Healthy Pina Colada
- 6 oz pure water
- 1 can pineapple juice
- 4 ice cubes
- ½ frozen banana
- 2 tbs low-fat plain greek yogurt
- 1 tsp coconut oil
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
Blend and serve.
Frozen grapes
Frozen grapes are a great summer treat especially when you are dieting. They are very sweet, low in calories, and high in fiber.
Chia seeds
My wife turned me on the chia seeds last year and we love to use them in our oatmeal and smoothies. They are great because they keep you fuller and increase the fiber of whatever you are adding them to.
If you have ever had a boba tea, they remind me of the jelly that they put in it.
Chia seeds are also high in essential omega 3 acids which are great for your health.
Beans
Beans are full of healthy fiber, carbs, and protein. This is especially one of the better food choices for vegans, as most vegetables and fruits are made of water.
This will help you stay fuller longer, which of course will lead to fewer sugar cravings.
Meat, Poultry and Fish
Similar to beans, animal protein sources will help you feel fuller longer which leads to fewer cravings. They also contain amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats that your body thrives on.
Flavored sparkling water
I am not a big soda myself, but my wife sure loves her diet coke!. We switched to flavored sparkling water and have had great results!
Sometimes, you just want something fizzy to drink. Make sure that you buy sparkling water with no artificial sweeteners.
Vegetables
Vegetables are one of the best options for sugar cravings because they keep you full throughout the day.
If you are full, you are less likely to have a sugar craving. You can also eat as many vegetables as you want, as long as you omit ones high in sugar such as Carrots, Corn, Potatoes, and Sweet Potatoes.
